Snow Rescue app for iPhone and iPad

Snow Rescue is a safety app meant for resort skiing/snowboarding. You’ll hopefully never have to use it, but you’ll be happy to have it, when you do need it.

If you have, or know someone who has been knocked unconscious, broken his or her back, fallen into a tree well or otherwise been immobilized while at a ski resort, you’ll see the potential value of Snow Rescue!

Head injuries, tree wells and snow immersion suffocation (SIS) are very real dangers for skiers and other winter sports enthusiasts who enjoy deep powder. Every year casualties are claimed by these hazards, and it often happens when people are enjoying themselves outside the groomers. The goal of Snow Rescue is to reduce these casualties using the technology most of us carry around in our pockets.

HOW IT WORKS:
By tapping into existing functionalities in your phone, Snow Rescue can determine when a user has stopped moving for a duration of time, and then notify friends via SMS based on a Buddy List. Simply add friends and activate, and these friends are then notified if you for any reason stop moving for a given duration of time. The app depends on data to send a message to users on the Buddy List, so always check how good the cell service and data networks are at the resort where you ski.

REAL LIFE SCENARIO:
You and your two best friends, Mike and Sarah, are out skiing in deep fresh powder at your local hill. After an amazing run through the forest, Mike is no where to be seen where you usually meet up. Usually he would show up, covered in snow, and with a big smile on his face. Not today though. Mike fell into a tree well and is unable to rescue himself. The clock is ticking. You and Sarah need to go get help or go and rescue Mike yourselves.

Under normal circumstances you wouldnt know that Mike needed help. He might just be taking a bit longer finding his skis or have taken a wrong turn. You and Sarah have waited for Mike and each other multiple times and everyone has always showed up with the big “Deep Pow” smile.

But today is different. You all downloaded the Snow Rescue app earlier in the season and within a few seconds after stopping, you and Sarah receive a notification that Mike has stopped moving and where he is located. You and Sarah act fast and contact the ski patrol. The ski patrollers are able to rescue Mike within minutes of falling into the tree well, and he fortunately lives to ski another day.

Background activity and cold weather can affect your phones battery life.

Ensure cellular data is turned on for Snow Rescue. Go to Settings > Cellular and “Use cellular data for”. Data is only used when sending a message, not for running in the background.
